South-east of Ajmer lies Bundi. A luminous white fort shelters the quaint houses, a steep paved carriage-way leads up to a complex of lovely palaces iridescent with exquisite murals, everything reflected in a deep, lapping lake in the centre.
Bundi was founded in 1342 AD by a Hada Chauhan chief. Bundi paintings are famous for the perfect link between Ajanta cave paintings and frescoes of Rajasthan
The white fort on top of a thickly wooded hill is one of the most picturesque in Rajasthan. It contains an enormous tank which supplied the palace with water. The celebration of Kajli Teej in Bundi is different from the Teej Festival celebrated elsewhere in the state and that is why it has its unique charm and sanctity. At other places Teej is celebrated on the third day of the month of Sravana but in Bundi it is celebrated on the third day of the month of Bhadra The festival starts with the procession of Teej in a decorated palanquin from picturesque Naval Sagar and passes through the market culminating at Azad Park.
Cultural programmes are organised in the evening in which local artistes and those from the Hadoti region perform. Though the Teej procession, is carried out only on two days, the celebrations continue upto the 8th day culminating on Janmashtami, birthday of Lord Krishna.
